BSCI Faculty Share Curriculum Excellence Insights with ACCE
Auburn University's McWhorter School of Building Science (BSCI) continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in construction education.
BSCI School Head Richard Burt, Associate Professor Tom Leathem and Senior Lecturer Drew Yantis recently presented insights on curriculum excellence at the 2024 Construction Education Consortium Industry Advisory Board (IAB) Event, hosted by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).
The session, titled “Trends in the Recruitment and Placement of Construction Management Students and Construction Management Program Instructors,” delved into the crucial role that IAB participation plays in curriculum assessment and development. Burt, Leathem and Yantis showcased the extensive efforts in conducting a Curriculum Review and Learning Improvement study at Auburn University, focusing on ensuring the program’s relevance in the ever-evolving construction industry.
The presentation was centered around a comprehensive survey conducted among BSCI graduates. The objective was to identify prevalent themes and essential skills necessary for success in the first 3–5 years of their professional journeys. This invaluable data formed the foundation for content analysis, enabling a visual interpretation of the graduates’ early-career needs.
Insights gained from the analysis were used to implement strategic improvements to the BSCI curriculum. By aligning Auburn’s program with the identified trends and demands of the industry, BSCI is fostering a learning environment that ensures its graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of the construction management field.
The emphasis on IAB participation highlighted the symbiotic relationship between academia and industry. The collaboration ensures that educational offerings are not only aligned with the latest industry trends but also address the specific needs and expectations of employers seeking skilled professionals in construction management.
By actively engaging with industry stakeholders and leveraging data-driven insights, the McWhorter School continues to set standards for excellence in construction education, preparing students for successful and impactful careers in the construction management field.
