Graphic Design Students Create Alabama Voter Guide Covers
Sophomore-level graphic design students in Fall 2013’s Introduction to Graphic Design course taught by Assistant Professors Courtney Windham and Robert Finkel, in the School of Industrial and Graphic Design, created brochure covers for the 2014 Alabama Voter Guide. Twenty-seven designs were presented to Secretary of State Jim Bennett and Director of Elections Ed Packard. Casey Kendall’s design won first place, and her cover will printed for the voter guide. Meg Carey received runner-up, and her design will printed if there is a need for a second edition of the voter guide. The voter guide is distributed all across the State of Alabama. Caroline Mitchell, Adriana Lee, and Kristi Garlock each had their voter guide design chosen to be re-sized into posters.
“The partnership that we have with the Auburn University Department of Industrial and Graphic Design presents a very unique opportunity for students to both learn their craft and engage in the voter participation process. The artwork is always extraordinary and the creativity is limitless,” said Secretary of State Jim Bennett.
Ed Packard, Director of Elections, goes on to explain, “For nearly 20 years, Auburn students have provided interesting and eye-catching designs for our voter guide and voter outreach posters. These projects are yet another example of what can be accomplished when state government and our universities join together in service to the people of Alabama. We appreciate the support of the administrators and the instructors—Courtney Windham and Robert Finkel—whose interest and enthusiasm were integral to the success of this venture.”
