GDES Students and Alumna Honored in 2024 Graphis New Talent Awards

Graphis, an international publisher of books and awards for the visual communications industry, hosts this annual competition to recognize student designers who produce polished, professional work under the guidance of their professors.

Graphic Design (GDES) students Cole Sibley and Lavens Magginis received Silver Awards in the Logo Design category for projects completed in Assistant Professor Devon Ward’s Introduction to Graphic Design studio. Both students were tasked with designing a logo for a city. Sibley selected Wellington, New Zealand, while Magginis chose Granada, Spain.

Seniors Hannah Duff and Erika Donley were recognized for the second year in a row. Both received an Honorable Mention for projects completed in the upper-level Graphic Design I studio, led by Associate Professor and GDES Program Chair Robert Finkel. Duff’s design of an identity and wayfinding system for Lake Tuskegee-Ford was recognized in the Outdoor Design category, while Donley placed in the Packaging category for her identity and packaging design for Spiffy, a line of reusable cleaning products.

Brooke Matey, a 2022 GDES graduate, was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Type Design category for her design of Dunlop 228, a typeface she created during her Senior Project. Matey’s design, completed under direction of GDES faculty Samantha Herbert, David Smith, Mario Bocanegra and Kelly Bryant, was selected for inclusion in Intercontinental Biennial’s traveling exhibit, “Crossing Continents.”
