Urban Studio Students Intern at Birmingham Firms
Part of the Urban Studio experience for fifth year students is to spend the second half of the spring semester interning with a local Birmingham architecture firm.
The students get a short break after completing their final thesis projects, then jump into working for the eight weeks leading up to graduation. Director Alex Krumdieck ’86 works with local firms to place students for their internships.
“We spend the fall and spring studios talking about how architecture must ‘fit’, but we also help our students see how an architect should ‘fit’ in a firm as well,” he explained.
While architecture students often work at summer internships throughout their collegiate careers, this is usually their last intern experience as a student. By now, they’ve learned more about their interests, what kinds of firms they are looking into and what types of work they want to do.
During this time, they are also interviewing for their first post-graduation jobs. It is not unusual for a spring internship to turn into a job offer either.
Here’s where you will find the Urban Studio 2026 spring interns:

Birchfield Penuel Architects are hosting Taylor Anderson and Abby Best.
