Landscape Architecture Faculty Member Honored with Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices Award

Hill will participate in the Emerging Voices Lecture Series on Thursday, March 14, at 11 a.m. CT alongside Katherine Darnstadt of Chicago-based architecture firm Latent. The lecture will be moderated by David Godshall, founder and principal of TERREMOTO.

Each year, the Architectural League’s prestigious Emerging Voices program acknowledges eight emerging practices that contribute to architecture, landscape architecture and urban design with a distinct voice that has the potential to influence the disciplines and broader communities. The jury assesses submissions based on their realized work, contributions to the design and academic communities and impact on the public realm. Winners are invited to give a lecture, providing a platform for their influential voices to be heard.

Hill founded HILLWORKS and joined Auburn’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture in 2009. He has served as the Graduate Landscape Architecture Chair since 2017.

HILLWORKS is grounded in the ecological and cultural landscape of the southeastern United States. The firm engages in design research on plant performance, including studies in phenology and novel ecologies, and the inventive reuse of land, such as community gardens and rewilding strategies. The studio embraces a range of scales, reflecting a dedication to the regenerative power of the landscape.

Alabama Meadows Research is an ongoing effort to understand and engage with the once expansive, ecologically diverse southeastern meadow landscape at Auburn University. This project is in collaboration with Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture Emily Knox.

Dekalb County E-911 Facility, a 16-acre property surrounding a call center, is designed to minimize maintenance and maximize ecological diversity. This project is in collaboration with Chambless King Architects.

Congregation Or Hadash Synagogue is an adaptive reuse project transforming a concrete auto-repair site into a multifunctional synagogue space with permeable surfaces. This project is in collaboration with BLDGS.

Hill’s latest recognition from the Architectural League joins the firm’s numerous accolades received since its founding, including the 2022 Honor Award in Research from the American Society of Landscape Architects for the Alabama Meadows Research Plots.
