BSCI has been encouraging students to study abroad since the early 2000s. During the school’s biannual trip to Quito, Ecuador, students work alongside local construction crews to build small structures or building additions using the tools, technology and methods available in Ecuador. They learn to maximize limited budgets and resources and gain skills like cutting and tying rebar and mixing and pouring concrete by hand. In addition to Ecuador, students have also traveled to Haiti and Panama to build low-cost sustainable housing. They learn to appreciate the vast differences in the means, materials and methods of construction and are immersed and welcomed into a new culture.
