CARV Lab Partners with Brasfield & Gorrie for Inventory Tracking, Localization Research
Auburn’s Construction Automation, Robotics & Visualization (CARV) Laboratory is partnering with Birmingham-based construction company Brasfield & Gorrie to research inventory management for large-scale projects.
The CARV Lab, housed in the McWhorter School of Building Science (BSCI) and led by Director and Aderholdt Endowed Associate Professor Eric Wetzel, is set to collaborate with the Birmingham-based construction company to examine how radio-frequency identification (RFID) and localization methods may support warehouse personnel in tracking assets from temporary, off-site storage to jobsites.
This collaboration reflects a shared interest in improving asset visibility, strengthening communication around asset status and location and supporting more efficient material and equipment tracking on complex construction projects. The research will also examine technical considerations such as reader performance in dynamic environments, tag placement, the integration of tracking data into practical, field-ready workflows that support warehouse personnel and clearer asset communication, and how tracking systems might integrate with automated material handling systems to further streamline the movement of assets between storage and jobsites.
Brasfield & Gorrie is a longtime supporter of BSCI, having contributed to the creation of the M. Miller Gorrie Center and the Brasfield & Gorrie Thesis Lab, regularly mentoring Building Science students and graduates through internship and employment opportunities and collaborating with the CARV Lab on construction innovation, industry engagement and student development initiatives.

Brasfield & Gorrie Operations Manager Ryan Miller said the company’s project teams are coordinating material and equipment across hundreds of active jobsites at any given time.
