Disabilities and Age-in-Place Home Designs

Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), an interdisciplinary research team led by PI Justin Miller, Co-PIs Wesley Collins, Shu-Wen Tzeng, and Jerrod Windham is creating designs and a phone app to assist people with disabilities and those seeking to age in place.

The overarching goal is to enhance the capacity for independent living among people with disabilities and those seeking to age in place through new and existing home design solutions that are affordable, sustainable, and capable of adaptation to meet individual needs. The app, called ADAPT, focuses primarily on assisting people to adapt their homes to accommodate disabilities.

The app is in the final stages of development and testing and will be launched in summer 2021; HUD plans to promote the app to a national audience.

Justin Miller is Associate Professor and Program Chair of Architecture at Auburn’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. Wesley Collins is Assistant Professor at Auburn’s McWhorter School of Building Science. Shu-Wen Tzeng is Associate Professor of Industrial Design and Jerrod Windham is Associate Professor at Auburn’s School of Industrial and Graphic Design.
