Student Spotlight: Sam Hamner
McWhorter School of Building Science senior Sam Hamner is finishing up his last few months of college serving as president of Sigma Lambda Chi (SLX). This organization offers recognition for academic achievements to students majoring in building science in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction.
Students are selected for membership in SLX by their unadjusted cumulative GPA, and the top 10% of students in the professional and graduate programs are invited to join. In addition to being president of SLX, Hamner has also served a term as Vice President of CADC’s Student Council. “I’ve chosen to be involved to give back to our school and our major and to seek out ways to order to create a better environment for everybody,” Hamner stated. “On top of that, I wanted the opportunity to grow my leadership skills.” Under Hamner’s leadership this past year, SLX officially established the Sigma Lambda Chi Ever Auburn Scholarship, an endowed scholarship that will be awarded on an annual basis.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Hamner will graduate with a bachelor’s degree this May and will join the architectural engineering company Haskell as an Assistant Project Manager in Jacksonville, Florida. “I’ve enjoyed learning different skills throughout the program and then putting them all together for our thesis project,” Hamner stated. “It has been neat to see how everybody involved in building science, from faculty to students, takes pride in the program and in the construction industry. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people that have helped make my time at Auburn a great experience.”
