Smith Named CADC Interim Associate Dean

Bret H. Smith, IDSA, professor and industrial design program chair in the Department of Industrial+Graphic Design, will serve as CADC interim associate dean for academic affairs. His appointment is effective May 20 and will continue until the permanent hire begins in this role. Smith will serve in the interim position while a national search is launched to replace Rebecca O?Neal Dagg, who is returning to teaching and research in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture.

Smith has taught in the Department of Industrial+Graphic Design for 28 years and has been program chair since 2009. He has directed design and research projects for numerous clients including IBM, Martin Marietta Denver Aerospace, 3-M, Broan-Nutone, Mead Imaging, and NASA. In 2011 he founded the Industrial Design History website, a site dedicated to the collection and preservation of design history. In 2012, Smith was honored for extreme volunteerism by the Industrial Designers Society of America in recognition of his founding the industrial design history website and for making extraordinary contributions to protecting and preserving the history of industrial design.
