Stephen Long is a Lecturer and Design/Build Manager in the Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. A native of Alabama, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s in Architecture from Auburn University and joined Rural Studio in 2010 as a third- and fifth-year instructor. In his role as site manager, he worked closely with student teams and faculty on studio-built projects. In 2025, he moved into a faculty position as Lecturer.
Alongside teaching in the fifth-year design studio, Long manages the Rural Studio wood shop and teaches a third-year fine woodworking course that emphasizes proper tool use, technique and the material qualities of working with wood.
Long has a life-long passion of making and has extensive experience in the world of building, where he has a strong interest in best practices and construction management. He also has great interest in advanced woodworking techniques and furniture design.
