Mark Olweny is a Visiting Associate Professor in the Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, where he teaches History and Theory of Architecture. Mark began his educational journey at the University of Adelaide, in Australia, completing his undergraduate degree with a double major in Cultural/Social Geography and Architectural Studies. His subsequent educational engagements were undertaken in Australia, Canada and Malaysia with professional degrees in Architecture and Urban Design/Planning, as well as a research master’s degree in Architectural Studies and a Doctor of Philosophy from Cardiff University in Wales. Mark has worked in architecture practice in Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Uganda, and was a founding partner of dESIGN@UMU a research focused practice based in Nkozi, Uganda.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Mark’s current research focusses on twentieth century architecture and urbanism in the context of sub-Saharan Africa with a specific interest in post colonial architecture and urbanism and the emergence and development of tropical modernism and its links to environmental design. In addition, Mark’s research explores decolonization in architecture practice and education as well as educational pedagogy, with an interest in the socialization processes in architecture education.
