Maria Elena Vanegas Perez is a Research Associate in the Auburn University College of Architecture, Design and Construction, working in the Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab. Vanegas Perez sees landscape architecture as a tool to understand and meaningfully respond to landscapes and their evolving ecologies. Her research and professional interests are grounded in a passion for cultivating and disseminating landscape literacy through visual narratives and design interventions that foster learning both in and from nature. In her work at Auburn, she has been discovering and studying the richness and diversity of the US coastal environments as part of a design research focused on the development of nature-based infrastructure to address environmental challenges and enhance the ecological and cultural opportunities of these landscapes.
