Modularity in Gypsum Wallboard

CADC faculty, Jeff Kim and Alyssa Kuhns, are conducting research on the application and installation of gypsum wallboard in construction. Their research examines how the wallboard could be redesigned as a modular panel system, which could increase flexibility in methods of installation and disassembly. The research team also examined industry impact including sustainable construction practices, the reduction of debris and material waste, and shortages in skilled labor as well as aesthetic and functional qualities of the interior. The team presented their initial work at the Auburn Faculty Research Symposium in January 2021.

Jeff Kim is Assistant Professor in the McWhorter School of Building Science and Alyssa Kuhns is Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture. The research team is thankful to Alana Parker at Rocket City Drywall & Supply and Amanda Kaminsky at Building Product Ecosystems for their consultation on the project.
