SUMMARY:Fall 2019 APLA Lecture Series Welcomes El Dorado\, Principals David Dowell & Josh Shelton
DESCRIPTION:El Dorado Here and Now\n  \nEstablished in 1996\, EL DORADO is an integrated architecture\, urban design\, curatorial\, education and fabrication practice with studios in Kansas City\, Missouri\, and Portland\, Oregon. In the beginning\, as equal parts art gallery\, fabrication shop and design studio\, ELDO was known for fingerless gloves and raffish outbursts that helped jumpstart Kansas City’s emergent culture. Today\, we work purposefully across scales and contexts\, from city blocks to exhibitions\, between critical ideas and an intangible\, spiritual attachment to place. EL DORADO’s two partners and 19 staff — including 11 architects\, a university professor\, curators\, industrial designers and certified welders — chase big ideas with a common touch. \n  \nEL DORADO was named the #16 Design Firm in 2017 ARCHITECT 50\, #11 in 2016\, and appeared in Curbed’s 2015 inaugural class of Groundbreakers. In 2008 the Architectural League of New York recognized El Dorado as an Emerging Voice. ELDO’s work has been published in Aeroflot Inflight\, Art in America\, Azure\, Architectural Digest\, Architectural Record\, CityLab\, DETAIL China\, Dwell\, Entrepreneur Magazine\, Kansas City Star\, Metropolis\, New York Times\, Slate and SPACE Korea. The practice is the recipient of numerous international and national peer-reviewed accolades\, including American Architecture Awards; AZ Awards; RADA Awards; Interior Design Best of Year Awards; Metal in Architecture Awards; inclusion in the Annual Design Review; and AIA National\, Regional and Local Design Excellence Awards.

DESCRIPTION:Steering into the skid\n  \nSarah Cowles is a founding partner of Isthmus Group LLC. For Cowles\, every site project is a forum to negotiate and invent new relationships of ecology and culture. Her prior experience includes practice with TLS Landscape Architecture\, where she coordinated site design of the US Consulate in Guangzhou\, and large-scale urban redevelopment projects in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including Treasure Island and Hunters Point Shipyard. \nAs a professor of Landscape Architecture in professional programs in the United States\, she has held positions at The Ohio State University\, Washington University\, and most recently\, The University of Southern California. Her courses and studios include the technical and the pragmatic to the inventive and theoretical. SUMMARY:Auburn Family Friday Speaker Series: Rusty Smith
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from Rural Studio’s 25 years of leadership in the area of Public Interest Design\, Rusty Smith’s talk will present Rural Studio’s commitment to Auburn University’s land grant mission with regard to building design\, constructability and affordability while simultaneously engaging in community growth\, health\, welfare\, sustainability and education. He will provide an inside look at how Rural Studio continues to evolve within the ever-emerging complexities of a rural community while simultaneously striving to educate its students as citizen architects. \nSmith is the associate director of Rural Studio\, Auburn University’s internationally recognized design-build program. Established in 1993 Rural Studio gives architecture students a hands-on educational experience while assisting the underserved communities of Alabama’s rural Black Belt region. The students work in partnership with their neighbors in the local community to define solutions\, fundraise\, design and ultimately build remarkable projects. In its initial years\, the Studio first became known for establishing an ethos of recycling\, reusing and remaking. Over the past decade Rural Studio has expanded the scope and complexity of its projects to include the design and construction of community-oriented infrastructure\, the development of more broadly-attainable small home affordability solutions\, and a comprehensive approach to addressing insecurity issues relative to income\, energy\, food\, health\, and education resources. All together\, the Studio continually questions what should be built\, rather than simply what can be built. \nRural Studio has earned a world-renowned reputation not only because of its one-of-a-kind hands-on approach to architectural education\, but also in recognition of now more than 200 beautifully designed and constructed projects. Located in the small town of Newbern\, Alabama (population: 186)\, Rural Studio has worked with a broad variety of community partners who together are committed to investing in and reinforcing the collective value of Place. The overarching philosophy of Rural Studio is quite simple: everyone\, both rich and poor\, deserves the benefit of good\, dignified design\, or what founder Sambo Mockbee often referred to as “Shelter for the Soul.” To date\, Rural Studio has educated more than 900 Citizen Architects. \nEducated first at Auburn University and then at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Smith is a nationally recognized teacher and scholar. His honors related to teaching excellence include the receipt of both the American Institute of Architects National Teaching Honor Award and the American Institute of Architecture Students National Teaching Honor Award. Collectively\, Rural Studio has garnered numerous recognitions for both teaching and design\, including The American Institute of Architects Presidential Citation\, The Whitney M. Young Jr. Award for Social Responsibility\, and the UNESCO Global Award for Sustainable Architecture.

SUMMARY:2021 Building Technology Educators’ Society Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Building Technology Educators’ Society advances design education by disseminating its members’ work and facilitating their interaction. This is critical not only for students of the building disciplines\, but also for those who rely on the work of those future professionals. The BTES Conference is both a celebration of this effort and its most dense expression. Auburn University is a Land Grant institution that prides itself on a robust balance of teaching\, research\, and outreach efforts within its region\, and because of its transdisciplinary contributions to the built environment and location in the deep south\, we extend the theme of a conference Out of Bounds. \nView more info here. \nDownload schedule here.
