DESCRIPTION:On the Brink: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs \n  \nIzumi Kuroishi\, PhD\, Professor of Architecture Theory and History at Aoyama Gakuin University\, Japan\, will present the final lecture in the APLA”s Spring 2016 Lecture Series: “on the Brink: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs\,” on Monday\, April 4\, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.  Professor Kuroishi”s research focuses on material culture and ethnographies of architectural space as well as on the idea of interior\, and on the relationship among technologies\, rituals\, and mathematics in the designing of buildings. She is the editor of Constructing the Colonized Land: Entwined Perspectives of East Asia around WWII. Her lecture\, “Small Houses with Large Dreams: Technology and Design of Prefabricated Houses in Postwar Japan” is in Dudley Commons B6 auditorium and is free and open to the public. The APLA lecture series is supported by practicing architects\, planners and landscape architects in the State of Alabama. SUMMARY:Environmental Design Hosts Susan Silberberg Lecture and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Design Program in the College of Architecture\, Design and Construction will host a lecture and workshop sessions by Susan Silberberg\, lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT and founder of CivicMoxie\, LLC\, a planning and urban design advisory group in Boston\, MA\, on April 7–8. Silberberg”s lecture\, “Placemaking: Building Communities through Design\, Collaboration\, And Action” is on Thursday\, April 7\, at 4:00 p.m. in Dudley Commons B6 auditorium. Two workshop sessions on placemaking will be on April 8\, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in 204 Dudley. All events are free and open to the public. \n  \nAn accomplished city planner\, urban designer\, architect\, author\, and educator. Silberberg is Founder and Director of CivicMoxie\, LLC\, a planning\, urban design\, real estate advisory and strategic placemaking group with experience in serving municipalities\, not for profits\, corporations\, developers\, foundations\, and community groups. She taught in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT for thirteen years and is the lead author of Places in the Making: How placemaking builds places and communities\, the MIT white paper on the current state of placemaking. Silberberg is also the author of The Common Thread in the November 2015 Royal Society for the for the Appreciation of Art (RSA) Journal. The article explores the power of “making” in placemaking to support local heritage\, traditions\, and culture.

DESCRIPTION:Designing Green is an annual event hosted by the School of Industrial + Graphic Design that focuses on sustainable design awareness and practice. This year\, Auburn”s Industrial Design program is teaming up with designer and inventor Dirk Vander Kooji\, Eastman Innovation Lab and Autodesk for the 2016 Designing Green Competition\, and students from the IDSA South District Conference schools have been invited to compete. Their challenge is to design a piece of furniture or other interior décor item that uses the unique\, large scale capabilities of Dirk Vander Kooji”s Endless 3D printer. \n  \nDesigning Green lectures begin at 9:00 a.m. on April 15\, 2016\, in the Student Activities Center\, room 104. Bryan Shackelford\, IDSA\, of Eastman Innovation Lab will lecture at 9:00 a.m.\, and Dirk Vander Kooji will Skype from the Netherlands at 10:00.
