DESCRIPTION:This week-long program is designed to begin with basic concepts and concludes with several architectural design projects. These projects allow the students to display the information they have learned throughout the week. The workshop is quite intensive but overly exciting with the vast hands-on experience the students receive. While working each day in the Auburn University School of Architecture studios\, students will be given not only individual guidance\, but they will have the opportunity to engage and learn from the university”s highly-qualified professors. Program faculty consists of dedicated and caring Auburn faculty members who hold degrees in Architecture\, Landscape Architecture\, and the Fine Arts. The faculty’s diverse background will ensure students a broad perspective of the different aspect of design. There will also be camp counselors present at all times with the students to ensure safety and supervision. In addition to their work in the studio\, students will experience campus-life while on the plains. From residing in Auburn’s resident dormitories\, dining at on-campus facilities and enjoying evening social and recreational activities\, the students will receive such a memorable experience that they will cherish this great opportunity. DESCRIPTION:On the Brink: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs \n  \nIzumi Kuroishi\, PhD\, Professor of Architecture Theory and History at Aoyama Gakuin University\, Japan\, will present the final lecture in the APLA”s Spring 2016 Lecture Series: “on the Brink: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs\,” on Monday\, April 4\, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.  Professor Kuroishi”s research focuses on material culture and ethnographies of architectural space as well as on the idea of interior\, and on the relationship among technologies\, rituals\, and mathematics in the designing of buildings. She is the editor of Constructing the Colonized Land: Entwined Perspectives of East Asia around WWII. Her lecture\, “Small Houses with Large Dreams: Technology and Design of Prefabricated Houses in Postwar Japan” is in Dudley Commons B6 auditorium and is free and open to the public. Carranza on March 28\, Dudley Commons B6 at 4 p.m. \n  \nLecture title: “Modern Architecture in Latin America: Art\, Technology and Utopia” \n  \nLuis E. Carranza is Professor of Architecture and of Art and Architectural History at Roger Williams University in Bristol\, Rhode Island\, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University”s Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning and Preservation. He obtained his B.Arch. at the University of Southern California and his PhD in Architectural History and Theory from Harvard University.  \n His research and published work focuses primarily on modern architecture and modern art and architecture in Latin America (with an emphasis on Mexico). This work emphasizes the relationship and codependence of social\, literary\, philosophical\, and theoretical ideas within the historical and material culture of architecture and design. Much of his research on these historical and theoretical themes can be found throughout his publications and\, specifically\, in Architecture as Revolution: Episodes in the History of Modern Mexico (University of Texas Press\, 2010) and in Modern Architecture in Latin America: Art\, Technology\, Utopia [with Prof. Fernando Lara] (University of Texas Press\, January 2015).

SUMMARY:APLA Fall Lecture Series:  Mariana Ibanez
DESCRIPTION:Mariana Ibanez is Associate Professor of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She teaches in the architecture core design studio sequence. Ibanez is an Argentinean architect and designer. Before attending the Architectural Association in London for her Master of Architecture\, she was one of the principals of FIV Architectura\, a firm that focused on the design and construction of ephemeral structures for performance spaces.   \nIbanez has been a guest critic at the AA\, MIT\, RISD and other institutions since 2004 and previously taught Design Studio from 1999 to 2002 at the University of Buenos Aires where she had received her Bachelor of Architecture. In 2005 she co-founded I/K Studio with Simon Kim\, a research and design practice with projects in London and Buenos Aires. After her graduate studies\, she joined the Advanced Geometry Unit at ARUP before going to the office of Zaha Hadid where she developed several projects as well as leading the design for the London Aquatic Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games. \n  Ibanez will present her lecture\, The Immersive\, November 9 in B6 auditorium in Dudley Commons at 4:00 p.m . DESCRIPTION:The School of Architecture\, Planning and Landscape Architecture Fall 2015–Spring 2016 Lecture series\, “on the BRINK: beyond which success or catastrophe occurs” continues on Monday\, October 26 with a free\, public lecture by Guy Nordenson titled “Reading Structures.” Nordenson is Professor of Architecture and Structural Engineering at the Princeton University School of Architecture and is principal of the structural engineering practice\, Guy Nordenson and Associates\, in New York City\, NY. The practice focuses on a number of on-going collaborations with architects. Recently completed projects include Kimbell Art Museum Expansion in Fort Worth\, TX with Renzo Piano Building Workshop\, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York with SANAA and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion in Kansas City\, MO with Steven Holl Architects among others. DESCRIPTION:Pumpkin Carve is an annual\, community-wide event hosted by Auburn’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students. This year’s event takes place on Halloween. In addition to carving your own pumpkin\, the day will be filled with music\, festive food\, and lively carnival games. Evening activities include costume competitions\, a silent auction\, and the illumination of all the carved pumpkins.
