BSCI Students Complete Service in Ecuador

BSCI Service Learning in Quito, Ecuador, Spring 2024

Eleven students from Auburn’s McWhorter School of Building Science (BSCI) journeyed to Quito, Ecuador, over spring break to participate in a Service Learning project.

Under the guidance of Associate Professor Jeff Kim and accompanied by BSCI Administrative Support Specialist Eva Wesche, the students immersed themselves in a four-day construction project at the Asamblea de Dios Minadale Women’s Clinic in Machachi. This endeavor marked BSCI’s fourth and final Service Learning trip for this facility, following previous visits in Fall 2022, Spring 2023 and Fall 2023. Students successfully completed work on an after-school program space in collaboration with Alabama-based non-profit SIFAT.

“Service Learning study abroad is intended to teach students about construction methods and materials utilized beyond the U.S.,” Kim said. “By serving the community and interacting with local construction professionals, they are able to expand their knowledge of both construction and the world.”

Beyond their construction project, the students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes of Ecuador. They explored the architectural wonders of downtown Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, gaining insights into the rich history and architectural heritage of the region. They also visited the Intiñan Museum, positioned precisely at the equator, and ventured to Peguche Falls, located at an altitude of over 8,000 feet.

“From mixing concrete under the scorching sun to engaging in heartfelt conversations with locals, this profoundly transformative trip far exceeded my initial expectations,” shared BSCI senior Gavin Medley. “I was able to deepen my understanding of construction concepts, hone my problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills and gain valuable insights from local experts and community members. It provided me with a perspective that no classroom lecture could replicate, bridging the gap between theory and practice.”

BSCI students will return to Quito in Fall 2024 to begin a new Service Learning project.
