Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality in Building Science Education

3D Model Viewable via AR/MR Apps

McWhorter School of Building Science faculty member Salman Azhar is examining how augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) can be applied in the classroom to enhance interest and knowledge of the design and fabrication complexities of building structures. The research team introduced AR/MR technology to building science students and then introduced structural models in both 2D and using the AR/MR technology. The research team, which includes Salman Azhar, along with graduate student, Guangyan Shao, and adjunct faculty member, Amna Salman, presented their preliminary findings at the Auburn Faculty Research Symposium in January 2021.

Salman Azhar is the William A. Hunt Endowed Professor and Graduate Programs Chair and Amna Salman is a doctoral student in the McWhorter School of Building Science. Justin Miller is Program Chair and Associate Professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture.
