APLA Welcomes Three Visiting Faculty Members
The Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture welcomes three visiting faculty members in 2024–25: Maria Elena Vanegas Perez, Kuhn Lee and Dr. Mark Olweny. Perez and Lee will serve as visiting professors in Landscape Architecture, while Olweny will join the Architecture faculty.
Vanegas Perez holds her bachelor’s in architecture from the Universidad de Los Andes along with a Master of Landscape Architecture from Auburn. She has previously served as a Research Associate in the Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab.
In her work at Auburn, she has studied the richness and diversity of U.S. coastal environments, focusing on the development of nature-based infrastructure to address environmental challenges and enhance the ecological and cultural opportunities of these landscapes.
Lee is currently a doctoral candidate in landscape architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A Fulbright Scholar, he earned his Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
His research examines landscape as a field of cultural identity, socio-ecological value and disciplinary interests, particularly in the East Asian context.
Olweny has a background in social and cultural geography and holds professional degrees in architecture and urban planning as well as a doctorate from the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. He has more than 20 years of experience in architectural education and practice in Australia, Canada, the UK and Uganda.
Currently Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, University of Lincoln, United Kingdom, Olweny is also a Research Associate Professor in Architecture on the Faculty of the Built Environment at Uganda Martyrs University.
“The addition of visiting faculty to the school is very valuable as these individuals introduce a breadth of perspectives on current approaches to design in our fields,” stated APLA School Head Justin Miller. “They bring their unique backgrounds and experiences to the classroom, enriching the education of our students. Their participation in school-wide activities such as design reviews or further expands the scope of ideas and approaches available to our students.”
