Lundell Receives Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award

Clark Lundell, Head of the School of Industrial + Graphic Design, was recognized with Auburn University’s highest honor for humanitarian service, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. This national honor has been presented at Auburn since 1951 and is bestowed on one male and one female student from the graduating class and one non-student.

Under Lundell’s more than twenty-five years of leadership, the Department of Industrial Design became the School of Industrial + Graphic Design. The industrial design undergraduate program has been ranked in the DesignIntelligence annual survey’s top ten since 2007, the graduate program has been in the top ten nationally for the last ten years, and the Graphic Design program has been included in HOW magazine’s list of top 60 design education programs in the country and in Graphic Design USA’s top graphic design schools from around the country “for nurturing the award-winners and game-changers of the future.” Lundell himself was named one of DesignIntelligence’s Top 25 Most Admired Educators in 2009 as someone who exemplifies excellence in design education leadership.

His service to Auburn University includes being the founding director of the Auburn University School of Industrial + Graphic Design Industry Collaboration Program that has sponsored more than 70 government, industry, and campus collaborations over the last 21 years. Lundell is co-founder and director of the Auburn University Human Odyssey Program and founder of the Architecture, Design and Construction College of Fellows.

“This prestigious award recognizes the hallmarks of Clark Lundell’s leadership that include tenacity, optimism, compassion, integrity, intelligence and boldness,” says Vini Nathan, Dean and McWhorter Endowed Chair in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction. “Through his long-standing influential role leading many different programs and units in the CADC, Prof. Lundell has established an incredible track record as an impactful leader of the community at all levels—student, faculty and staff, alumni, Auburn University—locally, regionally, and nationally.“
