Maria Elena Vanegas Perez is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture and a collaborator with Auburn’s Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab. Vanegas Perez sees landscape architecture as a tool to understand and meaningfully recognize the ecologies and practices shaping landscape. Her research and professional interests are grounded in a passion for cultivating and disseminating landscape literacy through visual narratives and design interventions that foster learning both in and from nature. In her work at the Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab, she has been discovering and studying the richness and diversity of the US coastal environments as part of a design research focused on the development of nature-based infrastructure to address environmental challenges and enhance the ecological and cultural opportunities of these landscapes.
