Graphic Design Students Recognized
Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) recognized several students in Auburn’s School of Industrial + Graphic Design with its 2018 American Web Design Awards and American Package Design Awards. GDUSA is a professional resource for news about graphic design, and each year, it showcases the best design in both industry and academics. Auburn is consistently among the most recognized programs.
Hailey Briggs, a Graphic Design senior, earned a GDUSA American Web Design Award in the Student Design category. She was one of only two student award winners in 2018 and won for her Klyde Warren Park Website Redesign Project, which featured a park she visited in Dallas, TX (www.klydewarrenpark.org). Briggs developed this website in Associate Professor Courtney Windham’s Interactive Media class during the Spring 2018 semester. “[Briggs’] design process and final prototype exhibited excellent skills in user experience and user interface design,” notes Windham. “Developing a new website strategy for the park was no small task. [She] went above and beyond to develop a prototype and presentation video that was professional and well-executed from start to finish. I was proud to see her challenge herself and grow so quickly in her ability to develop a beautiful new design for the project.” Images from Briggs’ website are featured on GDUSA’s online gallery of web design winners.
Eleven other Auburn graphic design students had their work chosen for GDUSA’s 2018 American Package Design competition in the student category. This annual competition, sponsored by Neenah Packaging, “celebrates attractive graphics as well as the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer.” Designs from two hundred elite firms, departments, production companies, and students were recognized. The Auburn Graphic Design students chosen were: Anaafi Sakyi-Addo, Katie Duncan, Will Givens, Grace Harken, Kathleen Kennedy, Megan Kesting, Mallory Michael, Greer Micelli, Anna Rogers, Morgan Searcy, and Devin Surber. Their designs are featured on GDUSA’s online gallery of package design winners.
“We are extremely proud of our students and how well they perform on a national level,” says Corky Nell, program chair of Graphic Design. “It is a testament to the talent and hard work of our students and faculty and to the support from the College of Architecture, Design and Construction and Auburn University.”
Auburn’s School of Industrial + Graphic Design figures prominently in other GDUSA award categories that recognize leading designers, design schools, students, and educators. Auburn’s School of Industrial + Graphic Design is a “2018 Top Graphic Design School.” Will Givens and Anna Rogers were included in GDUSA’s “Students to Watch 2018,” while Bailey Parkerson ’12 was featured on GDUSA’s “People to Watch 2018.” Robert Finkel, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, was a GDUSA “Educator to Watch 2018.” In addition, Associate Professor Courtney Windham was a GDUSA “Educator to Watch 2017″.
