Augmented Reality in Construction Quality Inspections

McWhorter School of Building Science faculty Jeffrey Kim and Darren Olsen are studying whether augmented reality (AR) technology could be used to improve construction inspections, reducing construction costs and improving productivity in the site. Their study uses AR headsets to assist construction inspectors with the task of inspecting the installation of in-situ construction components.

Kim and Olsen used a between-groups experiment to compare inspections by students using AR and 2D paper plans. They presented their findings at the Auburn Faculty Research Symposium in January 2021 and received a 2020 CADC Seed Grant to begin a second stage of work.
