The spring semester meeting of the SIGD Advisory Council will take place Friday, 20 March, to begin at 10:30 a.m. Central Time in Wallace 208. We are looking to expand our membership, particularly in graphic design. If you are interested, please attend as a guest.

The 11th Annual Designing Green Competition, inaugurated by the late INDD professor Brenda Peters, led by Associate Professor Jerrod Windham will begin Thursday, 19 March at 9:00 a.m. in Wallace Hall rooms 107-111. The 24-hour design challenge will be led by David Oakey of David Oakey Designs, a world leader in sustainable design and consultant to Interface Carpet. INDD students will work through a 24 hour charrette to come up with solutions that will be presented and judged on Friday, 20 March, by the SIGD Advisory Council. A Wallace Lawn Cookout will accompany presentations and judging.

The Annual GDES Juried Show will be held Monday, 16 March through Friday, 20 March at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and judged by Martin Venezky of Appetite Engineers, a small internationally recognized design firm located in San Francisco, CA. Associated with the show will be a lecture by Venezky and presentation of awards.

Flinchum Lecture on Henry Dreyfuss

The School of Industrial + Graphic Design welcomes Dr. Russell Flinchum, who will present a lecture, “Taking the Measure of Henry Dreyfuss,” on Tuesday, February 10 at 1:00 p.m., in 107 Wallace Hall. Flinchum is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Industrial Design at North Carolina State University. He is a former Peter Krueger/ Christie’s Fellow at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and was named Guest Curator for the exhibition Henry Dreyfuss: Directing Design.  He is the author of the accompanying book, Henry Dreyfuss, Industrial Designer: The Man in the Brown Suit. Flinchum’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Ebel Speaking at School of Industrial + Graphic Design Spring Convocation

Ben Ebel, Design Coordinator for OE activities in North America and chair of the Michelin Challenge Design global design competition, will be the speaker at the School of Industrial + Graphic Design’s spring semester convocation on Friday, January 16, at 10 a.m. An Auburn industrial design graduate who has worked for Ferrari, Volvo and Mercedes, Ebel has been responsible for the design of multiple global tire lines at the Michelin North American Research facility. His lecture, “How to Ask the Right Questions” as it relates to design will be in Wallace 107 and 111 and is open to the public.

Auburn University's Design Workshop offers an engaging program for rising ninth through twelfth grade students interested in a professional career in design. Hosted by the College of Architecture Design and Construction's School of Industrial and Graphic Design, this week-long resident camp offers an intensive design experience beginning with the identification of a design problem and rapidly progresses through idea generation, concept development, and exploratory prototyping.

Hank Richardson, Director of Design at Portfolio Center in Atlanta, GA, will jury the Graphic Design Spring Juried Student Show show and speak at 3 p.m. on February 26. The Graphic Design Juried Student Show is an annual exhibition and a competitive show featuring the year's best work by Graphic Design students in the School of Industrial + Graphic Design. Students submit their work in categories that include: Typography, Identity, Magazine Design, Book Design, Poster Design, Web Design, Interactive Design, Package Design, Illustration, and Photography. All events are free and open to the public. The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center is located at 222 E. Drake Avenue in Auburn and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Designing Green, Sustainable Student Design Competition, on February 20‒February 21

Designing Green, the School of Industrial + Graphic Design’s annual student sustainable design competition, will be held on February 20–February 21, at Wallace Hall. Sponsored by the student chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of American (IDSA), Designing Green 2014 features a speaker and a 24-hour sustainable design competition. Tiffany Threadgould, Chief Design Junkie at TerraCycle, Inc., an award-winning international upcycling and recycling company, will lecture at 9 a.m., on Thursday, February 20, in Wallace Hall, rooms 107 and 111.The sustainable design competition begins at noon. Student design teams will work with materials in the TerraCycle library, including wine corks, tents, and leather, designing an upcycled use for these materials in the form of a product. Judging will take place at noon on Friday, February 21. A cookout on Wallace Hall lawn will follow. All events are free and open to the public.
