creativeexchange: An American design experience at Auburn University

The School of Industrial + Graphic Design is pleased to once again host CreativeExchange, a two-week workshop for international students. CreativeExchange immerses participants in multi-disciplinary design sessions with personalized hands-on design instruction from Auburn’s highly regarded Graphic Design faculty. Students explore design through drawing, color, photography, collage, typography, and digital animation with an emphasis upon the exchange of Eastern + Western perspective. In addition to the American design experience, the CreativeExchange also includes visits to Atlanta to cutting-edge design firms and venues such as the High Museum, MODA, Portfolio Center, the Coca-Cola Museum, and SCAD Atlanta. This year’s Creative Exchange will take place from July 9 through July 30, 2016. Thirty seats are available for the 2016 workshop.

Twenty-two seniors in the Graphic Design program in the School of Industrial + Graphic Design will exhibit their senior projects in Wallace Hall, rooms 116–118, from Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 6. The opening reception for the Senior Show is on Monday, May 2, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Wallace Hall. The exhibit is open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Designing Green is an annual event hosted by the School of Industrial + Graphic Design that focuses on sustainable design awareness and practice. This year, Auburn’s Industrial Design program is teaming up with designer and inventor Dirk Vander Kooji, Eastman Innovation Lab and Autodesk for the 2016 Designing Green Competition, and students from the IDSA South District Conference schools have been invited to compete. Their challenge is to design a piece of furniture or other interior décor item that uses the unique, large scale capabilities of Dirk Vander Kooji’s Endless 3D printer.

 

Designing Green lectures begin at 9:00 a.m. on April 15, 2016, in the Student Activities Center, room 104. Bryan Shackelford, IDSA, of Eastman Innovation Lab will lecture at 9:00 a.m., and Dirk Vander Kooji will Skype from the Netherlands at 10:00. A cookout on Wallace Hall lawn will be at noon, and Jeff Smith, IDSA, will host a workshop on Autodesk at 1:00 p.m. in 107 Wallace Hall.

The Graphic Design 2016 Juried Student Show will take place Monday–Friday, March 7–11, 2016, at theJan Dempsey Community Arts Center, Art Gallery. This year’s judge is Ann Willoughby of Willoughby Design in Kansas City, Missouri. She will speak on Monday, March 16, 3–4 p.m., at Harris Center Lecture Room. A reception and awards presentation will follow. They gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closes Friday at noon. All events are free and open to the public.

Hosted by the College of Architecture Design and Construction's School of Industrial and Graphic Design, this week-long resident camp offers an intensive design experience beginning with the identification of a design problem and rapidly progresses through idea generation, concept development, and exploratory prototyping.

The 11th Annual Designing Green Competition, inaugurated by the late INDD professor Brenda Peters, led by Associate Professor Jerrod Windham will begin Thursday, 19 March at 9:00 a.m. in Wallace Hall rooms 107-111. The 24-hour design challenge will be led by David Oakey of David Oakey Designs, a world leader in sustainable design and consultant to Interface Carpet. INDD students will work through a 24 hour charrette to come up with solutions that will be presented and judged on Friday, 20 March, by the SIGD Advisory Council. A Wallace Lawn Cookout will accompany presentations and judging.

The School of Industrial + Graphic Design welcomes Dr. Russell Flinchum, who will present a lecture, “Taking the Measure of Henry Dreyfuss,” on Tuesday, February 10 at 1:00 p.m., in 107 Wallace Hall. Flinchum is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Industrial Design at North Carolina State University. He is a former Peter Krueger/ Christie’s Fellow at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and was named Guest Curator for the exhibition Henry Dreyfuss: Directing Design.  He is the author of the accompanying book, Henry Dreyfuss, Industrial Designer: The Man in the Brown Suit. Flinchum’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Ebel Speaking at School of Industrial + Graphic Design Spring Convocation

Ben Ebel, Design Coordinator for OE activities in North America and chair of the Michelin Challenge Design global design competition, will be the speaker at the School of Industrial + Graphic Design’s spring semester convocation on Friday, January 16, at 10 a.m. An Auburn industrial design graduate who has worked for Ferrari, Volvo and Mercedes, Ebel has been responsible for the design of multiple global tire lines at the Michelin North American Research facility. His lecture, “How to Ask the Right Questions” as it relates to design will be in Wallace 107 and 111 and is open to the public.
