Designing Green 2016

Designing Green, The School of Industrial + Graphic Design’s annual sustainable design competition, was expanded in 2016 to include students from the IDSA’s South District Conference that was held in Auburn on April 15–16. Auburn students, as well as students from IDSA’s South District Conference schools, were invited to design a piece of furniture or another interior décor item that can be created through the large-scale capabilities of Dutch designer and inventor Dirk Vander Kooji’s Endless 3D printer.

“The results are innovative and capture the imagination,” says Jerrod Windham, IDSA, associate professor in the industrial design program and faculty advisor to the IDSA Student Chapter at Auburn. “The possibility of having something printed by Vander Kooji has tapped into the students’ creativity.”

Speakers at Designing Green 2016 included Bryan Shackelford, IDSA, of Eastman Innovation Lab, who spoke to a crowd that included design professionals and students from the South District schools such as the Savannah College of Art and Design and North Carolina State University about “Design for Life Cycle.” Vander Kooji spoke via Skype from the Netherlands, and Jeff Smith, IDSA, hosted a workshop of Autodesk software.

Designing Green wouldn’t be complete without a cookout. David Cowan and Robert Capps created their usual culinary miracle for a huge crowd.
