Equipment and Facilities
The School of Industrial + Graphic Design (SIGD) is located in Wallace Hall. Built in 1984, Wallace Hall has more than 40,000 square feet and houses offices, classrooms, studios, and workshop space associated with the operation of the Graphic Design (GDES) and Industrial Design (INDD) programs. Students design and collaborate in dedicated studio space with state-of-the-art technology.
Graphic Design Studio
Recently renovated, all five GDES studio spaces are equipped with Ricoh Aficio SP C830dn color laser jet printers and access to two Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF6450 large format printers. Each studio space has a 60” Vizio 1080p HD flat screen LED TV for presentations and class instruction. One studio space is a dedicated lab of fifteen 27 inch iMac computers and is primarily used by students enrolled in the Type & Processes courses but is open to all graphic design majors as well.
After Type & Processes, GDES students are required to purchase their own laptops. Auburn University provides them with Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office 365 and access to a large library of fonts. Monitoring software such as PaperCut NG is used to help our students become more efficient and effective with their printing while saving them time and money.
Graphic Design Computer Lab
The GDES Computer Lab (Types and Processes lab), is equipped with fifteen 2015 model 27-inch iMacs running Mac OS X Mojave (10.14.4), Intel i7 quad core processors, 16 GBs of RAM, and 2GB graphics cards. The lab is also equipped with one Ricoh Aficio SP C830dn color laser jet printer. Our GDES lab is equipped with the latest versions of Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office 365, and other discipline specific software. These computers are mainly used for one semester for incoming GDES sophomores.
User Experience Lab
SIGD supports dedicated space focused on User Experience (Ux), User Interface (UI) and Service-Learning opportunities. These emerging areas of skill have become important to the viability of our graduates, reflected by ever-growing demand from industry. Students demonstrating knowledge and skill in these areas can demand 20% higher salaries upon graduation. The specialized equipment associated with this instruction includes various virtual reality and eye-tracking technologies and associated software.
INDD Computer Lab
The INDD Computer Lab, which is used by all Industrial Design students, has eighteen custom built workstations running Windows 10 Enterprise x64 and equipped with Intel i7 Quad core processors, 16 Gigabytes of RAM, HD 4GB Graphics cards supporting OpenGL, and 24” Widescreen displays. Two workstations have Wacom Cintiq 21” sketching displays as their monitor, and the other sixteen workstations are equipped with Wacom Cintiq 12” sketching tablets. This Lab also has two Ricoh Aficio SP C830dn color laser jet printers and one HP DesignJet t2300 postscript large format color printer. Our INDD lab workstations are equipped with the latest versions of Fusion360, SolidWorks, Rhino 3D Modeling, Keyshot rendering, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office 365, and other discipline specific software.
Industrial Design Studios
INDD Studio spaces are equipped with custom built workstations very similar to the INDD Lab and are also running the latest versions of Fusion360, SolidWorks, Rhino 3D Modeling, Keyshot rendering, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office 365, and other discipline specific software. All of the studio spaces have a 60” Vizio 1080p HD flat screen LED TV for presentations and class instruction.
Industrial Design Grad Lab
The INDD Grad Lab, which is used by all Industrial Design Grad students, has three custom built workstations running Windows 10 Enterprise x64 and equipped with Intel i7 Quad core processors, 16 Gigabytes of RAM, HD 4GB Graphics cards supporting OpenGL, and 24” Widescreen displays. This Lab also has a Ricoh Aficio SP C830dn color laser jet printer and one Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF6450 large format printer as well as one 3D Printer by Makerbot.
Rapid Prototyping Lab
The Rapid Prototyping Lab, located on the first floor in Room 130, has one Universal ILS-12.150d 150 Watt laser cutter, one Universal ILS-3.75 50 Watt laser cutter, and one Epilog Legend 36-EXT 75 Watt laser cutter. Accompanying these three robust pieces of equipment is a Roland MDX-650 CNC Milling machine used to aide in the production of conceptual models. This unit is used to mill 3 dimensional parts.
