Michael Hein is William A. Hunt Professor with the McWhorter School of Building Science at Auburn University. He has over thirty-four years experience teaching students of Engineering, Architecture and Construction and training industry professionals in a variety of topics in Engineering and Information Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University in 1971 and a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from Princeton University in 1973. His industry experience includes working as a Project Engineer for structural engineering consulting offices in New York City, Olympia and Seattle, Washington, and Auburn and Birmingham, Alabama. Professor Hein is a registered Professional Civil Engineer. His specialty areas include, Structural Design, Excavation Safety, Pervious Concrete, computation and visualization software including CAD and BIM, and Computer Aided Instructional delivery methods. For the past nine years he has collaborated with industry professionals and university facilities personnel to construct with his students pervious concrete pavements in and around the extended Auburn University campus. In 2009 Professor Hein was Principal Investigator on a Water Resources Research Institute funded research project measuring water quality improvement through pervious concrete paving. In 2012 and 2013 he received research grants to study Thermal pollution effects from pavements, both impervious and pervious. He has produced two training videos on pervious concrete pavements, and has published and presented on his research and work with students. He has also researched and published on effective methods of cleaning clogged pervious concrete pavements. Professor Hein is a member of the American Concrete Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers, and a founding member of the National Pervious Concrete Pavement Association.
